Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese presented the TV series “Vinyl”
American channel HBO launched a new series of Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and the screenwriter of “The Wolf of Wall Street” Terence Winter about the rock industry of the 1970 called “Vinyl” on February 14.
Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger spoke about the project, which later became the “Vinyl”, ten years ago.
Then the leader of The Rolling Stones turned to the director with the proposal to shoot the movie. Scorsese, who has always gravitated to the world of rock music and tried his hand at documentaries about Bob Dylan and The Band, said yes, and in the process they had the idea to produce the movie that could be Casino movie based on the music business.”
To run the project, Jagger hired Martin Scorsese and the creator of “Boardwalk Empire” Terence Winter. Soon they realized that they could not cram the whole story into one movie. “And because television has become so sophisticated and interesting, we decided to do the series” – said Jagger.
Thus, “Vinyl” was born. Ten-serial film will tell about the music industry in New York, at a time when it was formed, that is, in the 70s of the last century. The viewer will learn about the creation of the music label. Bobby Cannavale and Olivia Wilde will play the title roles in the film. James Jagger will play Bale Stevens, a lead singer of the punk rock band The Nasty Bits. The first series is the longest and lasts two hours. The rest will have one hour.
The action takes place in New York in 1973; the main character is Richie Finestra (Bobby Cannavale), head of the record label, suffering from cocaine addiction, quarrel with his wife and the loss of his business acumen. A 45-year-old Cannavale took up the role with pleasure. He read books about music and the music industry of that time. In addition, he “spent a lot of time with the right people”, including Patti Smith, the guitarist of Lenny Kaye and the frontman of The New York Dolls, David Johansen. “It was not like the training for the detective series” – adds Bobby.
Since “Vinyl” is the brainchild of Scorsese, there is no shortage of sex, drugs and violence. Alongside with decadence, the show has a lot of music of Dolls, as well as blues and rhythm and blues (in flashbacks) by the artists whom Finestra loved, when only came into the business.

“Without Mick this project would have been impossible, – says Martin Scorsese about his collaboration with the musician. – After all, we want to bring to the screen the spirit of the era, to make the viewer feel what it means to be an assistant in a record company, what it was like to perform at tiny venues and large clubs, and what the atmosphere in these rooms was. And who, if not Mick, knows this? “
“Martin is the first director, who made rock ’n’ roll a full-fledged part of his movies – reciprocates Jagger. – It was used in the movies by other directors, but no one has done it as Scorsese did. “
